Open Legal Questions

About Open Legal Questions

Introduction

Open Legal Questions (OLQ) is a free, public repository of open legal questions in English law. Our aim is to help practitioners and judges identify and ultimately resolve these open questions.1 Each entry provides an overview of an open question, illustrative fact patterns, relevant authorities, and suggestions for further reading.

OLQ currently focuses on criminal law. We hope to expand to further areas of law in the future.

People

OLQ was founded in 2026 by James Manwaring.

Technical site implementation is handled by Claude.

OLQ is inspired by Hilbert’s problems, the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, Our World in Data, Wikipedia, Markus Dubber’s Criminal Law Web and Peter Dostal’s (Canadian) Criminal Law Notebook.

Get in touch

You can get in touch at [email protected].

We would be especially interested to hear (1) feature requests or feedback from legal practitioners and judges, and (2) proposals for academic collaborations (e.g. writing entries, or editing new areas of law).

  1. Legal questions are ‘open’ if the relevant legal authorities are mixed or unclear as to the correct legal position. This site is not concerned with factual questions or settled-but-morally-controversial legal positions. ↩︎
